Wooden Animal Poem Sculptures
Poem Sculptures CommissionThese sculptures were inspired by the poetry of John Clare. His work describes the British Countryside of Northamptonshire in such an eloquent way and using his own local dialect. The texture is made using the words from his poem's which can be read on the surface of the design. I wanted to capture the energy of these wonderful British animals by making these artworks. They were so much fun to make that I am now accepting commissions for pets including dogs and cats.

Silhouetted Weather Vanes
One of the original ideas for these sculptures came from seeing some superb weather vane designs on church steeples in Northamptonshire. Not only does the wind move them but they are very traditional and show some of my favourite animals. The simple silhouetted shapes are perfect shapes to help create my designs. The oldest weathercock still in use in England stands in Devon, flying atop the church in Ottery St. Mary, it dates from about 1340. |
Carved Relief Poem Sculpture
Each individual animal is cut out and then carved from wood to create relief effect on the two dimensional surface after it has been drawn out. The words of the poems are individually glued in strips onto the wood using my own collage techniques. This means that lines of poetry can be read on the surface and back of the designs which then creates a poetic narrative for these creatures.
Ancient British Woodland Textures
The hare, fox and badger sculptures are mounted onto wood with the bark echoing both the texture of the floor and an ancient woodland in the depths of the British countryside. They measure approximately 66cm across by 33cm high and so will make a great centerpiece in any room.
