Painting Commissions Made With Poetry
This page is dedicated to those special paintings I have made which are not part of a series but are individual bits of passion or a small commission I have made.
The painting below for example was commissioned by the Reverend Elizabeth Dunning when leaving our church in Irthlingborough in 2016. She was inspired by the red kites she saw in the Nene Valley in Northamptonshire. |
Puffin Scotland. Based on the poem Desiderata by Max Ehrmann

In the slide show below are some of the other paintings I have made which are unique artworks made following a holiday or an event which I wanted to record. These paintings are all made using inspirational words, texts or poems that link to the painting themselves. My intention is that the viewer can then also read the collage picture itself.
Canal Life The painting 'Canal Life' was made because of my own longstanding love of the canals and wildlife in Northamptonshire. Every year my friend's and I would gently cruise the canal in a narrow-boat called 'Another New Day' from Gayton Marina to Miltons Keynes and back over a weekend in early September. This and the poem by Ian MacMillan 'Canal Life' inspired me to make a picture that captures the essence of these iconic waterways in the United Kingdom. |

The Flying Scotsman Steam Train
The wonderful atmosphere and immediate sense of power, movement and beauty of this newly restored train was the inspiration for this painting. In 2016 the Flying Scotsman came through my home town Wellingborough and then later over the Harringworth viaduct in Northamptonshire. Fantastic aerial photographs were captured as it plowed across the bridge and when I saw these pictures I wanted to paint it. Embedded in the picture are historical facts about this train which can be read when viewing the painting.

Walls For The Wind Scotland
When visiting Scotland for the first time in 2017 we stayed near Oban and from there visited lots of the wonderful places that the country offers. Seeing the old crofters cottages among the mountains and besides the lochs as we drove across the Isle of Mull to then take the ferry to Iona I was taken by the natural beauty of these islands. I wanted to capture it's texture and grandeur and at the same time incorporate a Celtic blessing that has cultural significance.
“May you always be blessed with walls for the wind.
A roof for the rain.
A warm cup of tea by the fire.
Laughter to cheer you.
Those you love near you.
And all that your heart might desire.”
