Canal Life Greeting Card

This gift card is based on a painting by artist Jamie Poole called  'Canal Life'

They are a big bold A5 size and come with a nice white envelope. They are great to send as greetings cards to friends and loved ones.

The 'paintings' are made using collage techniques from the words of the poet Ian McMillan. To make the original artworks I printed the poem in a range a up-to date and trendy colours and then cut, ripped, arranged and glued the words into these inspired designs.

My inspiration comes from nature and wonderful lino-cut print making that I admire. The words of the poem add a bit more magic to my imagination and allow you to see into the world of the poet and me - the artist!

I hope you love these designs as much as I did making them!

You can even read parts of the poem in the painting of the boat meandering down the canal.

Canal Life Greeting Card

The Nene Valley stretches from West Northamptonshire all the way through Peterborough and has the  Nene river flowing through it. The landscape is surrounded by lush farmland and old villages with hidden footpaths connecting them together. Jamie has always used this landscape as the basis for his artwork showing the wildlife and hills of his home.

Jamie's artwork frequently uses a range of mixed media techniques that have also incorporated words. In recent years this has become more important and now collage is a major part of his work which often uses words poetry. The lines  of various poems have been woven into his imagery - segments of which can be read.

The wide range of habitats such as wildflower meadows, wetlands, marshes, woodlands and wet grasslands are full of a diverse range of animals and birds. These offer endless inspiration for Jamie's artwork on a daily basis as he lives right on the edge of a stunning nature reserve near the towns of Higham Ferrers, Irthlingborough and Rushden.

The Poem Used in this Painting-

Canal Life
By Ian MacMillan

The canal tells you stories
The canal sings you songs
They hang in that space

Between memory and water

Once saw a narrowboat raised up,
Like it was cutting through the air,
Between two grass walls and the road below
Like it was sliding through history,
And a tiny vole swam across the water
So a tiny vole swam through history.

The canal tells you stories
The canal sings you songs

Once saw a man floating belly up in a canal
Like he was in the bath. He shouted
‘This is the life’ as I passed by on a narrowboat;
The sky was reflected in the surface
And we tied up in the places the map never showed us,
The man floating by, making ripples on the surface.

They hang in that space
Between memory and water

Once got waved at by a jogger as I stood gongoozling
On the towpath; her running gave rhythm
To the early afternoon, dog-strollers and kids
Who’d rather be here than sitting in school.
To gongoozle is to stand and watch narrowboats pass
And a canal is a lesson, a water-based school.

The canal tells you stories
The canal sings you songs

Once these canals were information highways
If coal and iron can be information,
And I think they can be. And there are bridges,
Pub gardens, the laughter of children
As they walk by the water; and the canals
Turn us all into curious children.
They hang in that space
Between memory and water

Once is never enough for a canal, I reckon;
You need to go back and see it again,
And sail it again, and smell it again, and
Touch it again; canals run through our veins
Like they stroll through this country
Like blood through our veins.

The canal tells you stories
The canal sings you songs
They hang in that space
Between memory and water
